An intrepid marathon-mum from Runcorn has smashed the £8,000 mark with the completion of her second 100 mile Ultra Marathon.

Shirley Anderson, 46, completed the St Oswald’s Way Ultra in a staggering 21 hours 37 minutes and as well as being first lady home, finished second overall.

A part exchange manager for Persimmon Homes North West, Shirley’s latest challenge has raised in excess of £750 for Kidney Research UK, inspired by 13-year-old nephew Harry who has a very rare kidney condition for which there is currently no known cure. The sum takes her overall fundraising to just over £8,000.

This was Shirley’s second 100 mile Ultra, and she said: “It’s not easy finding the time to fit in a 40 miles training when you work full time and have family commitments.”

The St Oswald’s Way Ultra took place on September 26th and the route was through some of the most stunning scenery in the north east. Setting off just after dawn, Shirley’s husband Stephen was waiting to greet her on the finish line the following morning when she arrived at 4.37am.

And more success was to come for Shirley earlier this month, when she won the women’s race in the inaugural Warrington Way 40 mile ultramarathon on November 7th, finishing in 6 hours 23 minutes.

“I did feel the pressure a bit going into the Warrington Way,” said Shirley, “everyone’s expectations were really high! But it was a great event, and I’ll be back next year – and I’m already planning ahead and hoping to complete another 100 mile Ultra Marathon in 2016!”
